Hegemoni Militer Dalam Film (Analisis Semiotika Pada Film Dokumenter ‘Kami Hanya Menjalankan Perintah, Jenderal!’ Karya Ilman Nafai)

The short documentary titled “Kami Hanya Menjalankan Perintah, Jenderal!” is a film by student Ilman Nafai. This film tells the story of how the military was involved in the events of 30 September 1965 (G30S/PKI) by presenting 3 prominent figures of former Cakrabirawa troops, to retell their experiences. From this point of view the film’s subjects expressed their views on the military orders that were restraining, so that they had to accept the stigma and discrimination of the public over being accused of being communist sympathizers. Therefore this film is full of meaning about military domination in the events of 30 September 1965. This research discusses about Military Hegemony in Indonesia, especially on the events of 30 September 1965 which was shown in the film “Kami Hanya Menjalankan Perintah, Jenderal!” by Ilman Nafai. This research uses Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis method in which the meaning of the signs in the film is divided into two stages namely denotative and connotative and the myths that move within it. By using the interpretive approach the researcher in this study analyzes the elements of the film related to the meaning of military domination on the 30 September 1965 incident and describes it in the structure of semiotic analysis. The result of this research is the documentary film “Kami Hanya Menjalankan Perintah, Jenderal!” stating the meaning that the military could dominate and plunge into the political joints of the country so that it can bring repressive actions under the pretext of security and curb its members to carry out a task even if it contradicts with humanitarian principles. The power of the director Ilman Nafai’s view in constructing the message in this film brought his audience to a new reality to dialogue across from what they received so far.
